Plot
In the mid-nineteenth century, Ada McGrath, a woman who has not spoken since childhood, travels with her young daughter from Scotland to New Zealand, where she is to marry a man she has never met. Her most meaningful form of expression is her beloved piano, which she brings with her to the other side of the world.
When her new husband refuses to transport the instrument to their home, Ada encounters George Baines, a man who offers her an unusual arrangement to regain possession of it. A complicated relationship develops between them, shaped by desire, power and emotional awakening. Jane Campion crafts a deeply sensual and moving drama about freedom, self-determination and the human need for expression.
